JOE RICHARDSON

Joe is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in London. His practice constantly moves between three areas: making teaching and walking.

Each method of working contains many different strands but at the heart of everything lies an interest in the in-between. Joe is fascinated by the intervals and spaces between these activities, the gaps between places, roles, one version of the self  and another. Joe's work explores how we move through the world and the embodied processes present r in the transitions we so often rush through

He describes himself, honestly, as 'a painter, amongst other things.' The studio remains a constant - a place where observational drawings made on trains, during commutes and on walks through the city form new works: paintings, cyanotypes, prints, sculptures sound works and performance pieces.  His studio work is fed, questioned and renewed by : teaching, walking, social engagement, collaboration and research.

Joe currently teaches across London and the UK with institutions including UAL (University of the Arts London) and City Lit, where he strives to help young artists develop their practice and build new skills. Teaching is a fundamental part of his practice -  it is part of how he thinks, questions and experiments. The classroom is a research space equal to his  studio and the outdoors.

In recent years, collaboration, walking and drawing have become a cornerstone of Joe’s practice as well as a formal research method . His drawing walks - undertaken alone and with others - use movement and observation as activation devices for examining anthrolpology/and the self.

Joe is interested in collaborations, curatorial conversations, teaching invitations and walking partnerships that feel genuinely mutual. If something here resonates with you, please get in touch.
